ArtSide: A Vibrant Mixed-Use Complex
At the heart of the redevelopment is ArtSide, a mixed-income and mixed-use complex being developed by NJPAC in collaboration with LMXD and MCI Collective, with design work by SOM. This dynamic project will feature 350 rental units, including 20 units of affordable housing, complemented by a range of cultural and retail spaces. A highlight of the development is the new home for Newark's beloved jazz public radio station, WBCO. Additionally, the project will extend Mulberry Street, transforming a former parking lot into a seamless connection within the urban landscape.Cooperman Family Arts Education and Community Center
Weiss/Manfredi has been tasked with designing another key element of the expansion – the Cooperman Family Arts Education and Community Center. This state-of-the-art facility will replace a parking lot, providing a dedicated space for students and community members to gather, learn, and engage with the arts. The center's innovative design and programming will serve as a hub for artistic expression and educational enrichment.Enhancing the Public Realm
The redevelopment project also includes significant improvements to the public realm. Chambers Plaza, NJPAC's front yard, is being redesigned by Future Green, creating a more inviting and vibrant public space. Additionally, the construction of Essex County Greet, a new urban park, will further enhance the community's access to green spaces and recreational opportunities.Preserving and Repurposing Historic Assets
Alongside the new developments, the project also includes the renovation of an existing building at 31 Mulberry Street, located adjacent to the Cooperman Center. OCA Architects is tasked with transforming this historic structure into a hub for offices and educational spaces, seamlessly integrating the past with the future.A Collaborative Effort Fueled by Public-Private Partnership
The success of this transformative project is the result of a remarkable coalition of public and private partners. NJPAC's chief executive officer, John Schreiber, expressed the organization's gratitude for the collaborative efforts that have made this new neighborhood a reality. The project has received significant support, including 0 million in tax credits from the New Jersey Economic Development Authority, as well as private financial sources and philanthropic contributions through a 4-million capital campaign. As Newark continues to evolve, the NJPAC redevelopment project stands as a testament to the city's rich history and boundless potential. By revitalizing its cultural epicenter, expanding educational and community resources, and enhancing the public realm, this ambitious undertaking promises to transform the landscape of Downtown Newark, solidifying its position as a vibrant hub of artistic expression, economic growth, and community engagement.New
